The final version of the Berkshire Landscape Character Assessment was published in November 2003 and is available to view and download free of charge from this website.
Due to the size of the document we have been unable to put a full version on the site. The version available to view and download contains the full text but excludes all of the figures and photographs of the landscape types. The photosheets for the landscape types are available to view seperately. The full document, which is currently only available on CD Rom, can be purchased from us directly at a cost of £5 (inc. p&p).
Paper copies of the Final Report have been sent to each of the Unitary Authorities in Berkshire and it may therefore be possible to view the document at your local planning department. It is however recommended that you contact them in advance to ensure that this is possible.
Both PPG7 and the Rural White Paper - 'Our Countryside: The Future' acknowledge the continuing pressures faced within the countryside to accommodate new development. These documents call for a greater understanding of the distinctive features found within the countryside to ensure that any new development is sensitive to its surroundings. Landscape Character Assessments are the tool advocated within these documents for achieving this understanding, ensuring that non-renewable and natural resources within the countryside are afforded protection.
