Sustainable development is central to the new, reformed planning system.  Sustainable development is development that improves the quality of life, both now and in the future, but not at the expense of the environment.

The purpose of the Strategic Environmental Assessment/Sustainability Appraisal (SA) is to ensure that sustainability is considered and integrated into the preparation of Development Plan Documents.

The Joint Minerals and Waste Local Development Documents (JMWLDDs) will be subject to a joint SA.  The SA will examine how different options in the Core Strategy help promote sustainable development and reflect sustainability objectives.

What stage are we working on now?

  • Publication of Final Core Strategy Draft Submission SA Report
  • Minerals and Waste Development Control and Preferred Areas SA Report

Which stages have we already completed?

  • SA Scoping Report
This is the first stage of the SA and is an opportunity to assess available information to determine the scope and level of detail of the SA.

  • SA Scoping Report Consultation
Consultation on the Scoping Report took place between January 16th to February 20th 2006.
  • SA Final Scoping Report
Following the consultation a Final Scoping Report was produced in Sept 2006.
